Job Description

At Curtin Maritime a Welder works as a part of the welding team in support of Curtin Maritime shipyard projects. This is a 100% field-based position. The work includes set-up, laying out work using fixtures and guides to repair, modify, or fabricate parts and/or equipment products. The welder must utilize welding equipment to complete work per specifications and in accordance with the production schedule in the shipyard. We are looking for someone with the ability to operate and /or use related equipment and tools which include stick, innershield, TIG, forklifts, hoists, slings, grinders (portable & bench), cutting torches, hand tools, drills, punches, a tape measure, etc. We set safety as our highest standard and expect that every employee wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for this position, including hearing protection, safety glasses, safety boots with metatarsal guards, face shield, welding helmet, welding gloves, welding sleeves/jacket (leather or cloth), and a respirator may also be required. Must maintain a safe and clean work environment by complying with procedures rules, and regulations.

YOUR EXPERIENCE:

  • 3+ years welding stick, innershield
  • Experience welding aluminum
  • 2+ years’ experience welding in a field environment

RESPONSIBILITIES/GOALS:

  • Capable of welding 50” per hour with stick
  • Capable of welding 80” per hour with innershield
  • Read and understand blueprints
  • Willingness to learn new skills and acquire new certifications
  • Eagerness to learn and become proficient in fitting and fabrication

TASKS AND DUTIES:

  • Understand types of metals and work techniques
  • Obtain and maintain extensive knowledge of joinery and interiors of vessels (ability to learn)
  • Obtain and maintain general familiarization with vessel systems
  • Communicate with Shipyard Superintendent and Project Managers on work plans and sequencing
  • Quality control welding projects
  • Maintain current knowledge of applicable regulations and support company compliance with ABS/USCG standards

SKILLS, APTITUDES, QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS:

Mental Aptitudes Required:

  • Attention to detail/excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations with focus.
  • Desire to learn, comprehend and progress, willingness to start from the bottom.
  • Understanding importance and taking pride and responsibility in mastering the small things, before mastering the big ones.
  • Understand and respect the chain of command. Ability to take direction no matter how it is given.
  • Continuously demonstrate a strong sense of responsibility and ownership by being pro-active in all situations /tasks.
  • Ability to measure and cut material.
  • Ability to read and comprehend a tape measure.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Physical Aptitudes Required:

  • Must be able to lift 100 lbs. without restriction. Position involves lifting, pulling, and operating heavy equipment and objects.
  • Agility to bend, stoop, or squat, and climb high steps/ladders frequently.
  • Physical dexterity and strength to operate deck machinery; work on equipment that is poorly accessible or in confined workspaces.
  • Must be able to keep balance/ equilibrium while performing duties at various heights and moving platforms.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time.
  • Adequate hearing & vision ability.
  • Proper heat/cold tolerance, working in all weather conditions.
  • Comfortable working while exposed to grease, dirt, paint, water, etc.
  • Must be able to swim

Preferred Certifications and Requirements:

  • LA City Certified Welder
  • Ability to pass ABS Welding test 1-7G
  • Shipyard Competent Person
  • OSHA 10 Hour Maritime
  • Qualified Forklift Operator
  • Qualified Rigger
  • Merchant Mainer Credential & TWIC Card
  • Participation in DOT Random Drug Testing Program
